I Ran Three Ad Campaigns On Three Different Platforms and Here’s What I Learned

This month, I’m working on building my own Etsy shop and marketing my products through advertisements. My goal is to learn what makes a successful advertisement and how to drive traffic to my storefront. Running ad campaigns on social media is one of the best ways to drive customer traffic to your shop.

I created ad campaigns on three different platforms: Facebook, Pinterest, and Etsy. I gathered the data from each campaign and compared the metrics. My goal was to see which ads were the most successful and what changes I needed to implement in my marketing strategies.

Facebook (or Meta) ads

With more than 2.7 billion active users monthly, Facebook is the most popular social media site. Facebook advertisements are a great way to advertise things and reach a large audience. Creating a strong professional Facebook account can also help reach a broad audience, driving more traffic to your business.

Here are the steps for setting up an ad campaign on Facebook:

Step 3: Choose your target audience

Step 4: Upload the ad visuals and description

Step 5: Define your budget and duration of the ad

  • With over 2.7 billion active users each month, Facebook provides a sizable audience for marketing.

  • Facebook’s ad platform provides great targeting capabilities, which allows ad campaigns to be highly targeted toward specific audiences.

  • Facebook ad manager is user-friendly and makes it simple to set up and manage campaigns.


  • With a minimum bid of $0.01 per click, Facebook advertising costs might be quite high.

  • The performance of Facebook's ads can fluctuate due to its unpredictable algorithm.

Pinterest ads

Pinterest allows users to find visual inspiration and new ideas. It's a great platform to promote products that cater to people's interests and hobbies. Because I was advertising clothing, I felt like Pinterest would be a great platform for me to reach my targeted audience.

Here are the steps in creating a Pinterest ad campaign:

  • With over 400 million active users monthly, Pinterest offers a sizable audience to market to.

  • Because Pinterest users have a discovery-oriented mindset, it's a great place to advertise products.

  • The platform's visual nature makes it simple to display products and motivate consumers.


  • With a minimum bid of $0.10 per click, Pinterest ads might be pricey.

  • Compared to other social media networks, this one caters to a more specific demographic.

Etsy Ads

Etsy is a fantastic platform for independent entrepreneurs and producers to market their distinctive products. I decided to use Etsy’s built-in advertising for listings to see if more traffic would be driven to my site.

Esty ads were the easiest to set up. All I had to do was go to my shop manager and go under marketing. From the marketing tab, I could choose my budget and which items I wanted to advertise. I chose to market my listing at one dollar per day for 15 days.

  • Etsy is a great platform for small businesses since it attracts a certain market of buyers who are interested in handcrafted and distinctive goods.

  • Etsy’s advertising expenses are fair and the most cost-effective compared to Facebook and Pinterest.

  • It is simple to set up and manage campaigns thanks to Etsy's user-friendly ad platform.


  • The narrow focus of Etsy's audience reduces the pool of possible clients.

  • Comparatively speaking to other social media sites, Etsy has fewer ad targeting options.

What I learned and what I would have done differently

Using social media platforms is an excellent way to advertise your products and connect with potential clients. Making informed selections when putting up ad campaigns requires an understanding of how each platform operates. Each one has distinct strengths and shortcomings.

I learned how to successfully set up different ad campaigns and drive customers to my shop. However, there are some things that I would do differently. Here are some areas I would improve upon looking back at this project:

  • I would have focused more on keywords in descriptions and titles to utilize SEO. There are a lot of ways I could have maximized my reach by utilizing better keywords in my descriptions and titles.

  • I also would have analyzed my budget better because I ended up spending a lot more on the advertisements than I anticipated. My goal would be to spend less money on the ads.

  • I would have taken advantage of Facebook and Pinterest business accounts. Adding posts could have strengthened my profile and driven more customer traffic.

I want to learn more about SEO so I can better utilize it in the future so I wrote a blog dedicated to the subject.
